The original building dated from 1342 and was once the residence of the caretaker of the Town Hall of Ypres and also housed the taproom for the aldermen. In the early 1620s this building was next to the Nieuwerck erected, an eastern extension of the Cloth Hall. In 1623 the old caretaker's demolished and a new building was erected as an extension of the Nieuwerck.
During World War I Ypres was destroyed. The city was rebuilt after the war and the Small Hall was rebuilt in 1924. In 1943 the building became a protected monument. After World War II the gable was restored in 1952.
